If we really care about the future of our world and meeting sustainability targets, we need to look at ways of producing things in a way that minimises the damage to the environment. And few materials are greener than recycled aluminium.
Aluminium is infinitely recyclable without any loss of quality – in fact, almost 75% of all the aluminium ever produced is still in use today – and it uses 95% less energy than producing primary (new) aluminium, with up to 97% fewer emissions. What’s more, it becomes even greener if the aluminium scrap is sourced and recycled in the UK. Which is the thinking behind the introduction of the LOCAL initiative by Cheshire and Midlands-based recycling specialists Tandom.
Standing for Low Carbon Aluminium, LOCAL highlights the fact that as much as possible of Tandom’s recycled aluminium is sourced and produced in the UK. But according to Director Mike Dines, it’s more than just a simple logo.
“The UK currently exports 650,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap every year. But the more of that scrap we can recycle in this country, the better it is for the environment – and for helping manufacturers achieve their sustainability targets.
“With LOCAL, we have a vision for the UK to create a robust and self-sufficient aluminium recycling ecosystem to reduce our carbon footprint even further, lessen our dependence on external markets and create more jobs. Ultimately, we see the UK standing as a beacon of sustainability and innovation in aluminium recycling, and by processing more scrap within our own borders we’ll also strengthen our industry and the UK economy.”
Tandom’s LOCAL initiative ensures the aluminium you use doesn’t come with the huge carbon footprint of primary production. Almost all of our production is UK-sourced and produced with the aim to be 100%. Which, for any business that uses aluminium and needs to meet ever-stricter sustainability targets, could be just what you need.
